Nadal Federer propose the 2009 Prince of Asturias

Rafa Nadal, Premio Prncipe de Asturias de los Deportes 2008, Roger Federer will nominate a candidate for the 2009 edition of the prestigious award, which is given annually in Oviedo. The Swiss, winner of 13 Grand Slam titles, has a great relationship with the number 1 in the world, who stars in one of the finest rivalries in the sport today.

Last Sunday, after the end of the Australia Open, the two players staged one of the most moving images of recent times, when Federer broke into tears after his defeat and Nadal had words of consolation and love with him.

In 2007, Nadal and Federer were a joint candidature for the Prince of Asturias. However, on that occasion, they had settle for second place, because the jury opted for Michael Schumacher, global F-1, by 16 votes to 12.

The Spanish champion

It won the prize last year, ahead of Michael Phelps, Bolt , the Spanish football and Yelena Isinbayeva. However, since then, he admitted that Federer "is also equally or more deserving than I am."

Swiss tennis player, renowned as one of the largest in history, has in his trophy five Wimbledon titles, five U.S. Open and three from Australia, so it is just a 'big' match of the record 14 Grand Slams of Pete Sampras.

Invited by the Foundation

The statutes of the Fundacin Prncipe de Asturias, candidates for this award must be nominated by schools, cultural centers and research institutions, universities and other institutions, those persons who call the Foundation, as well as members of each one of the jurors. " Thus, Nadal make their proposal after being invited by the organization.

The registration period ends on March 13, 2009, but Awards for Sports and Concord, the Foundation extends the deadline until July 24.

Number 1 in the world of 23 years, is scheduled to arrive this afternoon at the airport of Palma de Mallorca in Melbourne after winning the sixth Grand Slam of his career. Rafa will rest a few days in his hometown Manacor before returning to competition next week in Rotterdam.
